Colours and gender

Colours are adjectives. Colours are usually used to describe the physical characteristics of a noun. In Spanish adjectives have to agree to the gender of the noun that they are describing. Most colours in Spanish take the same masculine and feminine forms but not all. The following colours take different masculine and feminine endings.

colour masculine Spanish English feminine Spanish English
red rojo el libro rojo the red book roja la casa roja the red house
white blanco el techo blanco the white roof blanca la puerta blanca the white door
black negro el gato negro the black cat negra la mesa negra the black table
dark oscuro el cielo oscuro the dark sky oscura la noche oscura the dark night
light luminoso el color luminoso the light colour luminosa la camisa roja luminsoa the light red shirt
pale pálido tu rostro pálido your pale face pálida tu cara pálida your pale face

Colours and numbers

All colours in Spanish have to agree with the number of the nouns that they are describing; whether they are singular or plural. Forming plural adjectives depends on the ending of the adjective. Most that end in a vowel are made plural by adding s and most that end in consonant are made plural by adding es.

Las faldas rojas y el gorro amarillo. The red dresses and the yellow cap.
El piso azul ligero y las paredes oscuros The light blue floor and the dark walls.
Los arboles verdes y las flores blancas The green trees and the white flowers.
